Description
This painting was painted during church services at my home church in March 2015. I used acrylic paints as well as iridescent paints that give it an extra glow, which is quite stunning. I wanted it to show the power of the Holy Spirit that exudes from within us when we yield our lives to Jesus. Before Jesus ascended back to Heaven, He told his followers to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from on high (Luke 24:29) and after they did, they would be able to do greater works than Jesus did. John 14:12
I chose a Greek word for the painting's name because it sums up what this painting is about.
Phonetic Spelling: (ep-er'-khom-ahee),
Eperchomai is a Greek word meaning to come in, come upon, or overtake someone or something. The lasting effects are more important than the initial impact itself. When the Holy Spirit came upon Mary, she conceived Jesus. When the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus, He received the power to start his ministry. When the Holy Spirit came upon the people in the book of Acts, they spread the Gospel around the world. The Holy Spirit is intensifying from it's initial impact and about to explode upon the world scene as the return of Jesus, the Messiah, gets closer and closer. Hallelujah!
A white dove has been symbolic of the Holy Spirit ever since the time when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, his cousin. When John the Baptist baptized Jesus, he tried to describe what he saw. He saw something come down from heaven that looked like a white dove descending upon Jesus. Since that time, doves have been symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection from death, He told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they received power from on high.
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Greek meaning "I come to, arrive, come on, come upon, attack". 1904 eperxomai (from 1909 /epi, "on, fitting" and 2064/erxomai, "come") properly, come upon, i.e. what comes and leaves its appropriate, inevitable effects that build on the particular coming. (Note the prefix epi, showing the action as the "epi-center" of what happens.)
Strong's Greek Concordance 1904/eperxomai ("come upon, apt-coming") stresses the "fitting results" of the coming even more than the initial impact of the coming itself.
[1904 (eperxomai) is an intensification of the base-term (2064/erxomai, "coming").]
